SYTYCD UK Round 2 Review
This week, out of the competition is Stephanie Powell and Gian-Luca Loddo, last week their partners were kicked out so they were put together. They performed a Cha-Cha which was actually really good; Stephanie kept it hot and sexy and full of hips, it was definitely her dance. Gian-Luca brought his own flare, was strong and did well to keep up with the dance, just need a bit more technique. The song choice however, didn’t do the routine justice; it didn’t fit in with the choreography.
Also in the bottom two couples were Rithy and Shane who performed a hip hop routine, Charlie Chaplin style. It wasn’t a typical hip hop routine but was amazing, it was all in time, used each note of the music, the characters were so fun and it was a cute, simple routine. They had great teamwork, shown when Shane stopped Rithy from falling after one of the flips. Both were great and received praise from the judges, they didn’t belong in the bottom two.
Another couple who got hip hop were Bethany-Rose and Israel, considering Israel’s strength is hip hop, he did not do well this time around. Neither contestant did. Their characters were there but there was no life or power in their steps. The routine tanked, the judges didn’t have anything good to say about it, they should have been in the bottom two this week but dodged it, they better step up their performances, or next time they might not be so lucky.
Apart from this, everyone had a pretty good performance. Charlotte and Matt’s Jazz routine was first up, they had a cane prop and used it extremely well, it was a powerful routine, Charlotte fought through a head injury and Nigel said he thought Matt was one of the best male dancers there.
Katie and Lee C’s Contemporary routine was probably one of the strongest of the night, Katie, being in her element, she owned the routine but Lee managed to keep up. It was amazing choreography and the pair made it look simple and easy even though it was so technical. Everything flowed and the performance was full of passion, it was so strong and both did well, the only pointer from Arlene was that Lee needs to use his body more.
Following this were Lee B and Kirsty dancing a Bollywood routine. It was very upbeat, lively and very entertaining. Kirsty was much better technically, and she really attacked the dance, Lee needed a bit more power in the steps, but he showed some hidden strength, making the lifts look easy.
The Broadway routine by Tom and Katrina was full of energy, in the routine there was a great lift and spin into the splits from Katrina who definitely did better than Tom. She manages to change from dances effortlessly, it seems. Both were good and despite some criticism from the judges, Tom did much better than last week.
Also improving from last week were Alice and Charlie with their Waltz. Alice looked so beautiful, graceful and elegant and Charlie nailed the routine. He managed to get the technique down and made the dance his own.
Last to perform were Danielle and Luke doing a Commercial routine. Danielle definitely triumphed in that routine; as a dancer and the character she played. Both went all out in the routine, the faces, the energy and the attack were all there, but it was more lifts rather than dancing itself. The judges also had conflicting views, Nigel seeing nothing good from their performance.
The Royal Wedding also got into the show being the opening performance, it was a very upbeat and the classic old school moves made it so fun to watch. Overall, it was a better week for the majority of couples, however, the pair now out, were they really the worst on the night?
